Eritrean literature in the Tigrinya language dates, as far as is known, from the late 19th century but Ge'ez writings have been found in the 4th century b.c. It was initially encouraged by European missionaries, but suffered from the general repression of Eritrean culture under Fascist rule in the s and 30s. The earliest published works were primarily translations or collections of. The Ethiopian-Eritrean federation, a product of a United Nations resolution, came into existence in and was abolished ten years later. The primary objective of this book is to examine the rise and the fall of the federation in the nght of present-day realities. This central theme is placed in context by a reconstruction of Eritrean political organizations during the crucial postwar years.

Eritrean art and material culture has not been systematically studied or contextualised for the reconstruction of Eritrean art history, mainly because of war and instability. As a result, there is no well known art form that can uniquely represent Eritrean art other than the traditional Byzantine styled religious objects and art works. Since gaining independence from Ethiopia in , Eritrea has faced conflict with neighbouring countries and a series of major droughts. The perceived military threat from Ethiopia has led to compulsory and indefinite military service for all males, which has caused many hundreds of thousands of Eritreans to flee to other African countries or to Europe.
